Wat Mahathat at Ayutthaya

Wat Mahathat is located at the east of Wat Phra Si Sanphet. Some chronicles say “Wat Mahathat was built during the reign of Rama 1. Then, in the year 1927 King Ramkhamhaeng ordered the relics of the Buddha under the main pagoda of the temple.

The pagoda of Wat Mahathat is considered a chedi built during the Ayutthaya period was influenced by Khmer Chedi. The ground floor is built of laterite and the new addition at the top is brick. King Prasat Thong renovated the pagoda with a higher increase than before but now the balance falls to the podium only. It is a shame because there is evidence that the pagoda is very large and the construction is exquisitely beautiful.

In 1956, the Fine Arts Department dug up this pagoda found many important artifacts such as stone casket with 7-story pagoda divided into silver, Jin Otter, black wood, red moon wood, garnet, glass and gold the inner layer consists of valuable relics and ornaments. Now the Buddha’s relics are enshrined at the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum in Ayutthaya.

Another interesting thing in Wat Mahathat is the sandstone Buddha head cover with the roots of the bodi tree.
